Homily 1

Spanish Version

Saint Peter and Saint Paul

Today the Church celebrates the solemnity of Saint Peter and Saint Paul, considered by the Christian faithful as the primary columns on which not only the Holy Roman See, but all of the universal Church is based.

Founders of the Church of Rome, mother and teacher of the other Christian communities, Peter and Paul were the ones who moved forward their growth through the testimony of their live and martyrdom.

As we all know, Peter was one of the primary disciples of Jesus. He came to know Jesus through his brother, Andrew. Peter was on his boat, working, when he met the Master for the first time. Jesus looked at him and that look must have penetrated down to the most profound part of Peter's heart. The Lord saw in Peter what His Church would be like until the end of time. From that moment on, Peter felt attracted by Jesus' look, by His teaching and by His person. And from that very moment, Peter followed Jesus unto his own death.

On the other hand, Saint Paul was called through extraordinary signs. Paul was convinced that from the first days of his conversion that God had chosen him from his own conception. "He chose me from my mother's womb" Paul was would say.

Faith is conserved by giving it away was the teaching of the apostle Paul. That is what has happened since the disciples, on Pentecost Sunday, going out from the Cenacle and moved by the Holy Spirit, went out in all directions. This evangelizing mission continues in our time and is the normal way that the Church administers the treasure of faith. All of us have to participate actively in its dynamism.

A vocation is a divine gift that God has prepared for us from all eternity. God continues to call us, in different ways, to serve him throughout our life. When these invitations come to us we should be generous. Like Saint Paul, we should ask Jesus, in the silence of our hearts, what is it that you want from me? What do you want me to do without for you? How do you want me to better myself? At this moment of my life, what do you want me to do for you?

The same call that the Lord made to Peter and Paul, he makes to us to follow him in the midst of our daily chores. The Lord calls us to holiness and to be apostles. He calls us particularly to give of ourselves so that His kingdom will be extended throughout the world. That is why our life should have an apostolic tendency to bring others to Christ since bringing others to Christ is bringing them to joy, peace and fullness.
